Before You Begin

Welcome to the Vision Screening Protocol© Quickstart Guide. Before diving in, you must complete our training program to use the protocol. (We're trusting you!) You can register for the training HERE. As a professional, you are responsible for accurately interpreting screening data, providing knowledgeable advice, and communicating clearly with caregivers.

Please note that your use of the Vision Screening Protocol© and its components signifies your agreement to our Terms of Use. If you do not accept these terms, please do not use the protocol.

If a child presents with dilated pupils that do not respond to light or if a child has sustained a recent eye injury, advise the caregiver to immediately seek medical attention at an urgent care facility or from a pediatric eye doctor.

Vision Screening Process

These steps will help ensure a comprehensive and effective vision screening that supports the child’s visual health and development. Thank you for your commitment to helping identify children with vision concerns.

1. Initiate

Prior to meeting with a family for a vision screening, email and/or text them with the link to the Parent Questionnaire© (English or Spanish). This ensures all necessary background information is gathered beforehand. If the questionnaire isn't completed prior to a scheduled meeting, send a reminder text or email at check-in to allow the caregiver to finish filling it out.

2. Prepare

Before the vision screening meeting, review the caregiver's responses to the Parent Questionnaire© using the Scoring Guidance©. This review will help you tailor the screening to the child’s specific health needs and background.

3. Screen

Conduct the Objective Vision Tests during the session. Take the opportunity to discuss the caregiver's responses to the Parent Questionnaire© to address any concerns or observations they might have noted.

4. Analyze

After the screening, use the Scoring Rubric© to summarize the results and determine the recommended next steps. Document these findings on the Results & Recommended Next Steps© form to email results to caregivers.

5. Discuss

Discuss the screening results and any recommendations with the caregiver(s). Offer guidance and provide additional resources, such as CDE's Visual Development Guidelines (English or Spanish) and contact information for pediatric eye specialists, to support further care or needed interventions.
