Janet Anderson
Janet Anderson joined A Shared Vision in May 2018 after a 31-year career at Aurora Public Schools as a Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TSVI) and an Orientation & Mobility Specialist.
Janet especially enjoys teaching braille. “Braille is an interesting code and it brings literacy to children with visual impairment. I love reading and writing and want to share that love with children by teaching braille,” explains Janet. She also has a passion for teaching young children, including children with deaf-blindness and children with cortical vision impairment, because “it’s amazing to watch how children learn. Young children bring freshness, sweetness and humor to life.” Janet loves being able to work with families in their homes, forming connections with parents to help them as they support their child’s development. Janet has taught Orientation and Mobility to children of all ages and to adults. Orientation can be defined as understanding where one is in space, where one wants to go, and how to get there. Mobility is the physical act of getting from here to there. Janet believes that O&M is essential for babies and toddlers with visual impairment. As children explore their homes and community, they are learning. In May 2018 Janet was given the Colorado Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired’s (CAER) Lifetime Achievement Award for her generous heart, deep expertise, and amazing commitment and service to students with visual impairments and their families. In addition, in 2003, she was given the Gary Schmidt award in recognition of her high ethical standards, excellence in job performance, and professionalism. A Shared Vision is proud to have her in our family! Janet’s Motto: “Communicating and demonstrating positivity, balance, collaboration, and respect are instrumental in effective teaching and coaching.” |
