Edie Smith
Edie Smith joined A Shared Vision as an Early Intervention Teacher of the Visually Impaired and Orientation and Mobility Specialist in 2018. Prior to that she was a Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments at the Douglas County School District in Castle Rock, CO for 13 years.
Edie has extensive experience coordinating services to families with children who have special needs. “As I began to understand the complexity of vision and the brain, and how vision integrates other sensory information for us, it spurred my curiosity and built a passion to understand and apply my learning, to start a new career to support and teach children with visual impairment.” From 2000 to 2006 she served as the Family Resource Coordinator at Anchor Center for Blind Children where she developed resources and family-friendly processes that empower families in caring for a child with vision loss, including managing the intake process for new families, developing parent education programs and networking activities, and referring families to other community resources. “What I like the most about my work is that doing early intervention combines all of my job experience and skills,” explains Edie. “And I am absolutely fascinated by how children with visual impairments learn and adapt.” |
